breaking through the "Beige Barrier" with style
A.K.A the Societal Peg of Motherhood
After I gave my power pumps to Goodwill and closed the door to my corporate corner office I felt as if I fell off the side of a cliff in society's eyes.
Despite my beaming sense of pride and complete inner contentment in being a brand new mom, I was embarrassed to admit to myself that I felt reduced by my lack of clout and respect from the outside world.
Inside the walls of my home, I felt more important than any CEO and completely fulfilled. Yet once I closed my front door behind me with my daughter in tow, I could see how the world responded differently towards me and how I was constantly sized up as a "just a mom." That always sparked an inner urge to shout out: "Don't you know who I am?" Or should I say – "Who I was and what I've accomplished?"
I felt as if my cache, experience, and hard–earned status were all gone by simply not having that "power" biz card with Vice President stamped on it. The experience of fumbling through my purse for scratch paper and pen to write down my info for someone was flat out mortifying and one I'll never forget.
Isn't it enough that as mothers we watch our washboard abs turn into a replica of an old suede purse and that our once perky salute our toes? Who wants to feel further reduced or simply "beige" if even only on a superficial level?
I felt compelled to "fight back" for my dignity and well yes, my pride in being a mom with a sense of style and polish in the same way I felt when handing out my former big shot biz card.
Ever since I started handing out my Mommy Calling Cards I've felt completely redeemed in the inside and have been met with only impressive responses from the outside. I then became inspired to expand a stationery collection with purpose and style for women and moms from there.
So for the first time when writing about myself, I'm not at all inclined to talk about my past marketing career and all of the sexy, cool stuff I've done.
Being a mom is clearly my crowning achievement and the best "career decision" I've ever made.
Here's to celebrating "Mommyhood" with style.
